Review the Assets Declaration Act...Parliament Urged
By Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, Jan 23, Ghanadot - Mr. Ernest Kofi Abokyi, a law lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has asked Parliament to review the assets declaration act. He explained that, even though the law could be used effectively to check corruption and abuse of office by public officials, it has some gaps that need to be filled.

Mr. Kofi Abokyi who was speaking on a private radio station in Accra pointed some of the gaps in the law which he said must be reviewed by parliament. He for instance said that, the law is limited only to the public office holders and not their spouses or family. "But here in Ghana, family members are known to hold properties for and on behalf of public office holders" , he expressed his fear.

According to the law lecturer at KNUST, another gap in the law is that, the assets declared by public officials are made to the Auditor General for safekeeping and until a competent court of jurisdiction or some other bodies listed in the constitution request for it, the public would not be privy to the information. Mr. Ernest Kofi Abokyi said, the declaration of assets must be published for the consumption of the Ghanaian public and this would enable the people to cross check in terms of wrongful declarations.

"The assets declaration act means, public office holders should not exploit national resources to their selfish interest, but until the law is reviewed by parliament, it can never achieve its target", he said.
Mr. Kofi Abokyi has therefore propose a public declaration regime instead of the current situation where assets declared are sealed in a safe keeping with the auditor general.

Meanwhile, information available to Ghanadot indicates that, the Auditor General, Mr. Dua Agyemang would very soon submit assets declaration form to the Chief of Staff for completion by the President, Prof John Evans Attah Mills and his Vice, Mr. John Mahama as well as cabinet ministers who are yet to be appointed by the President. The Speaker of Parliament as well as Members of Parliament are also required to declare their assets.
