Accra, Sept 29, Ghanadot - Nana
Ohene Ntow, the General Secretary for the opposition New
Patriotic Party (NPP) faces stiff opposition in his bid to
retain the enviable post in the party as the party goes to
congress in December this year to elect its National
executives.
This is as a result of the interest declared by some party
bigwigs to contest the enviable position.
One of such high ranked person is
Mr Nkrabea Effah-Darteh, the former Member of Parliament for
the Brekum constituency who was disqualified by the party to
contest for the party's presidential slot in the year 2007.
According to Mr Effah-Darteh, his experience in politics
makes him qualified to be the
general secretary of the party and would very soon
officially declare his intentions.
"I am treading cautiously because of the unpleasant
experience I had when I attempted the presidential slot of
the party in 2007 for the 2008 national election" he said.
He however promised not to disappoint his admirers in the
party this time round.
Also in the race is Mr Obeng Busia, the nephew of ex- Prime
Minister, Mr Kofi Abrafa Busia. Until recently, Mr Oben
Busia was the Ghana's Consular General to the United States
of America.
For him, it does not matter who was to contests with him.
"It is a question of believing in yourself and in your
capabilities and what the party needs and being able to
marshal a message that will resonate with the mass base of
the party", he told reporters in Accra.
He said his strength would be in
making the NPP more alive to the realities of the 21st
century in terms of political organisation.
He denied the rumour that he was unknown in the party and
promised to be the party's scribe
after congress in December.
Meanwhile political analysts have predicted that, Nana Ohene
Ntow, the current general secretary of the party has an
up-hill task to perform in his bid to retain his position.
According to them, the defeat that the party suffered in the
just ended presidential election would haunt him and would
have to work extra hard to retain his position.
"It was under his watch that the NPP moved
from the status of a ruling party to the main opposition
party and that alone makes it difficult for Ohene Ntow to
retain that enviable position in the party", a political
analyst said.
