Muslim congress to promote youth welfare ended in Accra
By Awudu Salami Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, July 8, Ghanadot - The African Muslim Youth Congress (AMYC) has ended a four day workshop in Accra with a commitment to promote the welfare of the youth in Africa. The congress which started on Saturday July 4, 2009, ended yesterday.

Participants gave a promise to focus on education and strengthening of bilateral ties among African countries.

The workshop which was sponsored by the World Islamic Call Society (WICS) attracted participants mainly Muslims from African countries including Ghana, Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, The Gambia, South Africa and Sierra Leone.

In his address, the Director of the Bureau of Islamic Call Centres, Sheik Amar A bdul Salam Hareba stressed the need for opportunities to be made available for the youth, since they were the future leaders.

He expressed worry that globalization had had a negative impact on the attitude of the youth who formed about 60 per cent of the world’s population. He therefore called for a concerted effort to reverse the situation.

Shiek Abdul Salam further said, special emphasis should be placed on the education of the girl-child, imparting vocational skills to the youth and creating other avenues for the youth.

“The youth should also know their religious obligations and shun any acts of violence”, he advised.

For his part, the general secretary of AMYC, Mr. Abraham Bafelo called on African countries to initiate their own system of economic development relevant to their circumstances.

That, he said was the only thing Africa could do to achieve meaningful socio-economc development.
