E/R Minister to the rescue of Afram Plains
By Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, June 9, Ghanadot - It was recently discovered that, Afram Plains in the Kwahu North District of the Eastern Region has over the years experienced dearth of teachers in the various basic schools in the area.

Report has it that, most of the schools have no teachers at all and that those that have sometimes have one teacher per school.

When the situation came to the attention of the Eastern Regional Minister, who had barely been in office for 4 months promised to provide lasting solutions to the problem.

The Minister, Hon Samuel Ofosu Ampofo's efforts to address the acute shortage of teachers in the area were given a practical meaning when 96 prospective senior high school (SHS) graduates in the area were identified for admission to colleges of education.

The students would be enrolled in the teacher training colleges in the Eastern Region and the Kwahu North District Assembly would pay for their fees. Upon completion, the students would be required to go back to the district and teach to help fill the vacant classrooms in most of the basic schools in the area.

Reacting, the Easter Regional Minister said, he had decided to seek the technical advice of the principals of the various colleges of education so as to find long term solutions to the poor standard of education in the region, especially in the Kwahu North.

"It is only when we provide a window of hope for students to acquire knowledge and skills at our colleges of education that they can be in a better position to impact positively and uplift the standard of education in the region and the country at large", he stated.

He therefore urged students to take advantage of the offer to enable them add value to themselves and help eradicate ignorance, poverty and diseases in their respecttive district.

For his part, the Kwahu North District Chief Executive, Hon Charles Evans Apraku commended the regional minister for his commitment to addressing the disparity of teacher-pupil ratio in the area and declared the preparedness of the assembly to sponsor the prospective students.
