Civil servants should desist from politics, says Mr Robert Nortey
By Abdul Salam Sule

Accra, May 19, Ghanadot - Mr Robert Nii Akwei Nortey, the acting head of the Civil Service has appealed to civil servants to desist from politics and concentrate on their work.

He said, it is against the civil service law and the constitution for civil servants to engage in political activities and they should remain neutral to carry out their duties effectively and efficiently.

Mr Robert Nortey said this during a current affairs programme on GTV. He also advised the government to attend to the needs of civil servants which he said was an improvement in their salary structure and good working condition, saying civil servants are the least paid.

He said, the civil service is the principal arm of government which translates government policies and programmes into reality and it could not be taken for granted.

The Acting Head of the Civil Service explained that, what the civil service needs is recognition and budgetary support to help assist government to run the country.

A retired Diplomat, K. B. Asante underscored the role of the civil service and called for closer collaboration between the civil and public service to help co-ordinate and implement government policies and programmes. He said, in their performance of their duties civil and public servants should always bear in mind the principle of neutrality and therefore serve any government to the best of their ability.
