Accra, March 18, Ghanadot - The Domestic Violence and Victims
Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service in Accra will
from next month embark on a sensitization programme in all
public and private schools to educate students on domestic
violence issues.
Domestic violent clubs will therefore be formed in the schools
to be visited, in consultation with the authorities.
The Public Relations Officer of DOVVSU, Accra, Chief Inspector
Irene Oppong disclose this in an interview. She said, the idea
of the programme was to educate the students and pupils on
security tips, tricks used by criminals to lure their victims
and to inculcate in them the habit of being open to their
parents, friends and teachers about their problems.
Chief Inspector Oppong said, DOVVSU had observed that some of
the children fall prey to criminals but fail to report the crime
either to their parents, teachers or the law enforcement
agencies.
She cited an instances where some of the victims would disclosed
the identity of their attackers only after they had been
threatened with punishment, stressing the exercise would help to
break the silence of students.
Chief Inspector Oppong said, the exercise would also be extended
to tertiary institutions in the country through the Students
Representative Council and expressed the hope that tertiary
students would spread the exercise to cover the whole country.
