School of the
Blind invites First Lady to be patron
By Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot
Accra, March 13, Ghanadot - The Akropong School for the
blind has appealed to the first lady, Mrs Naadu Mills to
take over the mantle as its chief patron and help mobilise
resources to support the school.
This is because, by the statute of the school, every first
lady of the country is expected to be the chief patron of
the school.
The headmaster of the school, Mr Annor made this appeal
during the presentation of cocoa products to the school by
the Ghana Cocoa Board as part of activities to mark this
year's open ceremony of the school.
Mr Annor said, the immediate past first lady, Mrs Theresa
Kuffour was the chief patron of the school and with her
tenure of office over, it is the turn of Mrs Naadu Mills to
take over.
Given the history of the school, Mr Annor revealed that, the
school was started with four pupils, one girl and three boys
on August 6, 1945 on the premises of then Presbytarian
Teacher Training College and later moved to its present
location.
"Since then, the student population had grown to 315, which
made up of 176 males and 139 females with 53 teaching staff
and non teaching staff", he explained.
He said, the school was a complex structure of a
kindergarten, primary, junior high schools, a vocational,
resource centre and a low vision centre.
Mr Annor commended the Sight Savers Interntional for funding
the refurbishment and equipping of the resource centre with
assertive devices which would enable students with low sight
to access information on their own with ease.
He has however appealed to the general public, the
government and other stakeholders to support the school with
teaching materials and expressed the hope that with such
facilities the school could train more people and help
reduce the number of beggars with sight problems on the
streets.
The items presented by Ghana Cocoa Board to the School of
Blind include five cartons of chocolate, 10 catons of All
Time Drinking chocolate and GHC 1,000 and it was presented
by Mr Vincent Okyere, the manager at the office of the Chief
Executive of the Board.
