Gov't cleared over controversial trip to Abidjan
Abdul Salam Sule

The various airwaves in the country were yesterday chocked with the report that the government had sponsored some party officials of the National Democratic Congress, (NDC) to watch the final football match between Ghana and DR Congo at Abidjan, the capital town of Cote D' Voire over the weekend.

The critics of the government asserted that, with the promise by the Atta Mills led administration to run a lean budget this year, it is betrayal on the part of the government to sponsor party officails to watch the football match with a chattered airforce plane.

The government was more lambasted when the Daily Guide newspaper edition of yesterday also reported that all the NDC officials on board the airoplane were given per-diem by the government for travelling to watch the final football match.

Though the government came out to deny sponsoring that trip, the opposition parties were adamant to the government denial.

But it has been found out today that the information that was put out yesterday by some of the private newspapers in Accra was false and there was no iota of truth in the said report.

In a Press conference this afternoon, Mr. Kojo Bonsu,a business magnate and sports fanatic in Accra said,he was the one who sponsored the trip to Abidjan.

According to Mr Bonsu, his love for football, especially the Black Stars has always encouraged him to sponsor trips to support the national team when they are to play outside the country.

He revealed that, since the year 1992,he had been sponsoring foreign trips to support the senior national team and described the allegation leveled against the government for sponsoring the trip as mischevious.

"Irrespective of the government in power, I have been sponsoring these trips and I think the reason was to give encouragement for the boys to win the tournament", he said.

Mr. Bonsu also intimated that, only three government officials were on board the plane and no money was paid for per-diem and hotel. This was contrary to the media report which suggests that 30 officials of the NDC attended the trip.

He explained that, those on board the plane were football fans and some sports journalists in the country.

He said, instead of encouraging many other sports fans to sponsor foreign trips to support the senior national team, the media is rather discouraging them by attaching politics into it, saying, it is not the right thing to do.

Mr. Bonsu has therefore called media to always cross check their facts before putting to out to the public domain.
