Gov't to establish fund for farmers
Salami Awudu, Ghanadot

Accra, March 5, Ghanadot -The financial difficulties that some Ghanaian farmers are going through will very soon be diminished as the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Mr Kwesi Ahwoi has promised to establish Agricultural Development Fund, (ADF) to cater for the financial needs of the Ghanaian farmer.

According Mr Kwesi Ahwoi, he would task the relevant directorates to link up with the Ministry of Finance to design the scheme for implementation within the next 12 months.

He revealed that, the the purpose of establishing ADF was to support the Ghanaian farmer financially to be able to buy the necessary farm inputs to maximize production.

The Minister of Food and Agricultural made this promise at his maiden meeting with staff of the ministry.

He said his goal was to make the Ministry the most efficient within the government machinery through the best management practices.

He added that, his ultimate objective was to guarantee food security for the country and increase raw materials to feed industries.

"Our products, be they raw materials or finished products, should be able to compete on the local, regional and international markets," he said.

Mr Ahwoi intimated that, his task was to provide farmers and other operators in the sector with the requisite technical and entrepreneurial advice and support schemes so that they could farm better and contribute more effectively to national development.

He said, in order to improve access to mechanised agriculture, he would pursue large scale introduction of appropriate mechanization implements such as tractors, power-tillers, cultivators and animal traction implements.

The Minister hinted would review all existing agreements on fishing within Ghana's territorial waters to ensure that the livelihood and long-term interests of fishermen and residents in the coastal communities were guaranteed.

Mr Ahwoi gave the assurance that the government would rigidly enforce the ban on the use of light and explosives for fishing as well as the use of unorthodox fishing methods currently being used by some local and foreign fishing trawlers resulting in the depletion of marine fish resources.

He also promised to re-design and implement the youth in Modern Agriculture programme under which young and unemployed school leavers would be given special training.
