Nurses and midwives must be tolerant, declares CEO of Nurses and Midwives Council
Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, Feb 22, Ghanadot - The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Nurses and Midwives Council of Ghana, (NMC), Reverend Veronica Darko has expressed concern over the intolerant manner in which some nurses and midwives treat patients under their care.

She revealed that, some of the nurses and midwives welcomed patients in impolite manner to their health facilities, rained insults on them when they are unable to provide certain vital information and showed impatience when explaining prescriptions dosages to them.

This behaviour, Reverend Veronica said, is not helping their image as health service providers and therefore urged them to exhibit the natural tendency to be sympathetic, caring and patient to their client.

The CEO of Nurses and Midwives Council was speaking at the close of a two day workshop in Accra yesterday. The workshop was under the theme 'enhancing the image of nursing and midwifery practise in Ghana.

Among the topic discussed were professional adjustment, a code of conduct for nurses and midwives and teamwork.

Reverend Veronica Darko attributed the bad service delivery to the recruitment of wrong calibre of people into the training institutions and wondered wether the persons with the right qualities in terms of personality traits are recruited into the profession.

She has therefore asked principals and tutors of nursing and midwivery training schools to ensure proper screening and training of candidates before they joined the workforce.

On his part, the Chief Nursing Officer, Mr George Kyeremeh cautioned nurses and midwives against compromising their integrity for money.

He advised them to be professional when dealing patients, saying, people are now more informed on their health needs.
