Pair Trawling is Back- Fishermen
Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot

Accra, Feb 6, Ghanadot - Fishermen at Chorkor, Teshie and James Town in the Greater Accra Region have today confirmed to Ghanadot that, pair trawling has resurfaced.

According to the aggrieved fishermen, before and during the December general elections, the practise subdued but it has resurfaced making it difficult for them to make a catch whenever they went to fishing.

The fishermen explained that, they have since reported the practise of pair-trawling to the authorities concerned but nothing seems to be done about it. They have therefore threatened to take the law into their own hands and would ruthlessly deal with persons they encounter on the high seas engaged in pair-trawling.

A fisher man at Chorkor, Mr. Nortey, in sharing his experience with ghanadot on the activities of the illegal fishing said, he and his team last week apprehended some persons on the high seas and seized their generators and lighting gadgets. He said they later handed them to the police at Chorkor for further action.

Mr. Nortey has therefore appealed to the President, Prof Mills to fulfill his campaign promise of banning the practice of pair trawling on Ghana's high seas territory.

In a related development, fifteen chief fishermen, representing various fishing groups in the Greater Accra Region have petitioned the Government Transitional Team at the Accra Conference Centre to as a matter of urgency find lasting solutions to the illegal fishing by foreigners on Ghana's high seas territory.

The spokesperson for the Government Transitional Team, Ms Hannah Tetteh after receiving the petition promised the fishermen that, the Attah Mills led administration would as it promised in the campaign period banned the practice of pair trawling and severe punishment awaits those who would go against the directive.

She however urged the fishermen to exercise patience saying, the sector Minister who the President has appointed is yet to be confirmed by Parliament.
