Nana Addo urges NPP Parliamentary aspirants to remain selfless and loyal to ultimate victory in 2012

Tuesday, January 18, 2011:- THE 2012 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has called on all potential contestants, delegates and executives of the party “to treat the upcoming exercise of electing parliamentary candidates for the party as crucial to the unity required for a formidable campaign to win power in 2012 and bring back hope to Ghanaians.”

This, he said, when Parliamentary hopeful for Subin and a close aide, Mr. Eugene Yaw Boakye Antwi, informed the Presidential Candidate that he has rescinded his decision to file when nominations begin later this year and to commit his “energy, efforts and resources to help [the] party recapture power in 2012.”

Nana Addo has commended his friend, Mr. Antwi, for “exhibiting such selflessness and loyalty to the ultimate cause. Eugene’s decision, which has been taken for the sake of party unity in the Subin constituency, is a sacrifice and posture worthy of emulation.”

In an open letter addressed to the General Secretary of the party, Eugene Antwi writes, “As a member of our party’s highest decision-making body outside of National Congress, that is the National Council, it has become incumbent upon me to lead the UNITY crusade in the Subin constituency in particular, and our party in general, to ensure that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo wins the Presidency, come December, 2012.”

His message to other aspirants across constituencies is, “I respectfully implore and urge other parliamentary hopefuls across the country, who are nurturing parliamentary ambitions, to consider carefully the STABILITY and UNITY of our party above their personal ambitions.”

Mr. Antwi stresses, “In my considered view, winning the presidency in 2012 comes way before my personal political ambition. Indeed, getting Nana Addo elected is in itself the best way of enhancing our individual political ambitions. We need the presidency in order to implement the brilliant vision and policies we have, as a party for Ghana.”

Eugene Antwi also added in his statement, “My supporters and admirers are urging me to contest the upcoming parliamentary primaries, but having carefully and soberly reflected on the STABILTY and UNITY of the constituency in particular, and party in general, I have decided to throw my weight and support behind the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hon Isaac Osei MP.”

Nana Addo, in response, explained, “the Executives of the Party, under the able-chairmanship of Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, are doing all that is possible to ensure that our parliamentary primaries are conducted in a free, fair, transparent and cordial manner with a strong family spirit.”

While welcoming internal competition, the 2012 Presidential Candidate, however, calls for "discipline, fairness, and solidarity" in the conduct of the primaries.

He states, "There’s bound to be only one winner at any parliamentary primary. The maturity and health of our internal democracy would be enhanced by how the winners and losers can all work together after the primaries for the ultimate victory in 2012. Thankfully, we have, by the 2009 constitutional amendments, multiplied the number of delegates for the parliamentary primaries by, at least, four times at every constituency in the country, representing a greater sampling of a candidate’s popularity in the constituency than we had in the past.”

Mr Antwi, a former Secretary for the UK-Eire branch of the party, contested Isaac Osei for the 2008 Subin primaries.

Mr Osei received 52 votes, representing 50%. Mr Antwi got 34 votes, representing 32% and Mr George Ayisi-Boateng got 18 votes, representing 18%.

The party is expected to announce soon the dates for the parliamentary primaries, which take place this year, with very few exceptions.
