Road accidents claim 1.6% of Ghana’s GDP each year
By Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot

The economic loss of road accidents as a result of medical bills, loss of productive hours of disability among others, to Ghana is about 1.6% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or $165million each year.

This figure is more than what Ghana receives from its development partners yearly as aid.

This is figure also higher than the ongoing Bui Hydro Dam Project to provide electricity to serve the Brong Ahafo and northern parts of the country.

Launching, the “Safe a life with a text message” campaign in Accra, over the weekend, an anti-road accidents campaigner and a Musician, Mr. Bice Kwabena Kufuor, popularly known as Obuor observed that “we can save as much as we get as loans and grants from donor countries if we help sell best road safety practices through well coordinated and sustained road user education and campaigns”.

Ironically, the lead agency, which is the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC), does not get a decent fraction of the resources required to deliver safe roads.

According to him, road safety is a shared and collective responsibility, saying he would continue to play his part and it was time to contribute to your own safety.

The “safe a Life with a Text Message” campaign provides Ghanaians with the opportunity to contribute to the cause of road safety in the country.

Mr. Obour added that with one Ghana cedi, an individual could help change an attitude and get the news to the un-repented.

To save a life an individual needs only to text the word “SAFE” to 1947 for all networks operating in the country.

The Executive Director of the NRSC, Mr. Noble Appiah, indicated that road traffic injuries are a leading cause of death, injuries and disabilities around the globe, killing about two million people globally and leaving several millions maimed.

He however debunked the notion that Ghana was the third accident prune country in the world and appealed to the media help carry out good road safety information to the benefit of the citizenries.
