EU supports Audit Service to improve public financial
management in Ghana

Accra, July 2, Ghanadot - The
European Union (EU) technical support programme signed
between the Government of Ghana and EU is to assist the
Ghana’s Audit Service to improve public financial management
system in the country.
The three year agreement, which is on the external audit
component of the public financial management programme was
signed in 2006 between the National Audit Office of the
United Kingdom and the EU through the European Development
Fund.
The objective of the agreement was to assist the Audit
Service of Ghana to achieve its vision of becoming one of
the leading Supreme Audit Institutions in the world.
Speaking at a farewell party organized by the Audit Service
for the two EU consultants namely, Mr. Jay Fatormah and
Madam Beatrice Akintomide, who were assigned to provide
technical support to the Service, the Acting
Auditor-General, Mr. Richard Quartey disclosed that the
project was estimated at the cost of about GH¢665,000 and
was executed in the areas of Information Technology (IT)
audit capacities, expanding and improving the quality of
performance auditing, implementing IT strategies and
strengthening the IT department of the Service as well as
improving the human resource management systems within the
Audit Service.
Mr. Quartey was quick to add that as a result of the project
the Service had chalked a number of achievements including
the timely submissions of over 30 performance audit reports
to Parliament, set up IT audit capabilities which has led to
substantial savings through recoveries of payroll
overpayments in some Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs),
introduced modern methods of financial auditing in
accordance with international standards.
He acknowledged the immense contribution of the consultants
toward broadening the prospects of the Service, especially
in the area of IT, among others.
In their farewell message, the consultants of the project,
Mr. Jay Fatormah and Beatrice Akintomide thanked the Audit
Service for given them to contribute their quota to the
development of the Service in the country.
