Six students in police custodyfor throwing stones at school's administrator
Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot
Accra, May 18, Ghanadot - The
Proprietor of OLISTAR Senior High School at Abesim in the
Sunyani Municipality of the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana,
Emmanuel Olitse has caused the arrest of six students for
allegedly throwing stones at the school’s Administrator,
Edward Mensah.
Ghanadot gathered that on Thursday, last week, Mr. Edward
Mensah attempted going to the boys’ hostel of the school to
reclaim debts of school fees owed by the students.
On his way to the hostel, some of the students threatened to
throw stones at him, if he dared enter the hostel, with the
excuse that Mr. Mensah is fond of
entering into the hostels of both Girls and boys.
The Administrator did not heed to the threats by the
students as he embarked on his mission,
and the students started throwing stones at him.
Theadministrator, subsequently,
informed the proprietor of the school, Mr. Emmanuel Olitce,
who infuriated by the news,
immediately rushed to the hostel and had
three of the students arrested and taken
to the police station in Sunyani.
After taking the three students to the police station, he
reported that the students were misbehaving and were
attempting to stage a demonstration on the campus, so
policemen were detailed to the school where another set of
three students were also arrested and detained in police
cells.
The Proprietor of the school admitted that he caused the
arrest of the students because they were misbehaving which
was against the rules and regulations of the school.
However, when asked whether parents of the arrested students
have been informed, Mr. Olitse claimed
that a meeting was ongoing for
that purpose and that soon after
that the parents would be informed.
Most of the students were from the outskirts of Sunyani and
it would not be easy to get in touch with their parents
within a shortest possible time.
Sunyani Municipal Police Commander,
Superintendent Charles Botwee,
confirmed that the students were arrested and detained on
Thursday, but called for their
release and advised them at his office not to engage in such
act again.
According to Superintendent Botwe, even the arrested
students were innocent but were just victim of circumstances
because they failed to run away during the time of arrest,
since they thought they were not part of the people who
threw stones at the administrator.
He however urged the school’s authority to always abide by
the rules and regulations of the Ghana Education Service and
put in place some internal mechanisms to address such
situations instead of taken the matter to police.
Superintendent Botwe noted that the arrest could affect the
students in many ways, since they may feel dejected and
betrayed by the people whom their parents have entrusted to
cater for.
