Accra, May 5, Ghanadot - The Volta River Authority (VRA), Ghana Civil Aviation Authority
(GCAA) and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) have
indebted the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMA) to tune of over
GH¢1million, since 2007.
According to the GMA, their 10% landing charges due the agency
for the past three years were still outstanding. This has really
affected the performance of the organization.
This came to light when the Minister of Communications, Mr.
Haruna Iddrisu and his Deputy, Mr. Gideon Quarcoo paid a maiden
working visit to the agency in Accra.
Addressing the staff of the GMA, Mr. Iddrisu appealed to the
workers to exhibit high technical and professional competence in
order to provide quality and reliable weather forecast services
to numerous clients.
He urged them to let quality of service be their watchword as
their work entailed sensitive tasks related to safety systems in
the aviation, marine industries among others.
“Continuous capacity building of staff should be the main focus
so they can be abreast with global technical and scientific
standards”, he indicated
The Minister assured them that the government would make all
efforts to implement the single spin salary structure so as to
give decent salary to workers.
With regard to efforts being made at commercial transformation
of the service of the agency, the management has to apply
negotiation skills with the sister bodies on win-win basis in
line with the World Meteorological (WMO) and International Civil
Aviation Organisation (ICAO) guidelines. The ministry would
continue to support such efforts, the Deputy Minister of
Communications, Mr. Gideon Quarcoo assured.
The Director General of the Ghana Meteorological Agency, Mr.
Michael M. Tanu identified obsolete equipment, low remuneration
and inadequate human resource base as the challenges of the
agency.
He therefore noted that the collaborative effort between the
agency and the University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University
of Science and Technology (KNUST) had led to the establishment
of meteorology department within the School of Physical Sciences
in Legon and Kumasi campuses.
Mr. Tanu pledged the agency support to the ministers to enable
them to pay attention to their resolve to redouble our efforts
at improving the quality of the services they diver to their
clients and the general public.
Earlier the Ministers and their entourage were conducted around
the agency facilities as well as some units such as the
climatological, Hydro meteorological and computer to ascertain
the state of the equipment.
