Bawku workers threaten government over poor security
By Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot

Accra, Jan 19, Ghanadot - Public servants and other workers in the Bawku municipality have issued atwo week ultimatum to government to improve the security situation in the area.

In a statement issued yesterday, the workers said they would be forced to lay down their tools or relocate if the security situation in the area does not improve.

They say so far seven of their colleagues have been killed in sporadic clashes in the area, the latest being a medical assistant who was shot on New Year’s eve.

A teacher at a local basic school in Bawku, Matilda Bolega, said the workers are living in fear.

“We are not safe in Bawku and that is why we are asking government to come out and do something,” she told Joy News on Monday.

“After the fight when you get to my school, the school children will pick a number of bullets. And at times, it happens when we are in school... you could have an enemy who could be looking for you [to kill].”

Protracted conflict in Bawku has, over the years, led to several deaths whilst property worth million of Ghana cedis have been destroyed.

The Kusasis and Mamprusis sporadically exchange fire despite a large deployment of military and police officers there.

There have also been reports of a guerrilla training camp in the area but officials have played down the existence of such a facility.

Authorities have also promised to check of weapons smuggling in the area as they are inundated with regular reports of the crime in the area.
