Poverty Reduction Strategy lacks sufficient
investments
By Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot
Accra, Jan 24, Ghanadot - One of the major setbacks likely
to affect the implementation of the Regional Poverty
Reduction Strategy is the lack of sufficient investment from
member states and ECOWAS.
The information officer at ECOWAS, Ugoh Sunday disclosed
this to Citi Business saying, there are some critical
sectors that member states have identified which need
immediate attention.
Some of these, he says, are linked directly to achieving the
millennium development goals adding that although they have
development partners, more funds would be needed for
effective implementation of the initiative.
He however added that plans are far advanced to implement
the strategies agreed upon by member states.
He noted that within the context of Millennium development
goals (MDG’s), ECOWAS have made the commitment to address
certain important issues in the areas of maternal health,
child health, HIV/AIDS, economic development and Universal
primary education access.
The Regional Poverty Reduction Strategy is aimed at
collectively reducing poverty in the sub region although
there are similar strategies in member countries to tackle
poverty locally.
