Avenor clashes, one person killed
Audrey Agyiri-Inkoom, Ghanadot

Accra, Nov 16, Ghanadot - One person has been killed and several others injured in clashes at Avenor, a suburb of Accra, after gunmen attacked residents this morning.

The violence erupted after a busload of people arrived at a settlement in the area to work on a property belonging to the Word Miracle Church.

The clashes come days after the church secured a court injunction to demolish structures on a parcel of land in the area.

A team of police officers supervised a demolition exercise last week which residents protested. The police have arrested 27 people in connection with the incident, 17 of whom are believed to be land guards.

The land guards had claimed the church had asked them to carry out an exercise on its parcel of land there.

But residents say the armed land guards started firing gunshots on arrival, arousing panic.

The gunfire reportedly triggered a clash in which one of the land guards was gunned down and his left armed severed.

Police investigations into the incident are under way.
