Justice Short: CHRAJ will be impartial in M&J investigation
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, Oct 12, Ghanadot - The Commissioner for Human Rights and administrative Justice, Justice Francis Emile Short has disclosed that his outfit has written to the British High Commission in Ghana for assistance in investigating the Mabey and Johnson bribery scandal.

President John Mills has invited the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice to step into the fray.

The Health Minister, Dr George Sipa Yankey and a Minister of State at the Presidency, Amadu Seidu have resigned.  They said the resignation was for the opportunity to clear their names.

They were alleged to have taken various bribes from the M & J, a UK Bridge Construction firm, between the 1980s and 1990s in return for Government contracts.

Justice Emile Short in an interview on Citi FM, said he expects the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to collaborate with CHRAJ in unearthing the truth.

“It is my expectation that whatever information is in the hands of the Attorney General would be handed over to CHRAJ which will facilitate and expedite our investigations.”

Justice Short said the amount and type of information dug up over the case will determine the mode of investigation.

“When we get the information that we require, it would enable us determine whether there is the need to embark on field investigation, in other words, going to the United Kingdom or whether the information we receive is sufficient to enable us initiate an effective investigation.”

He promised that the commission will assert its independence and neutrality in the investigation of the Mabey and Johnson (M&J) bribery scandal involving some top officials in Ghana.

CHRAJ boss dismissed concerns that CHRAJ might be influenced by the Government, considering the fact that it was the President who invited the commission to take over investigations into the scandal.
