Hawkers back on streets and pavements

Accra, July 2, Ghanadot - A visit
by GhanaDot to the central business district of the capital
to ascertain the progress of the
decongestion exercise carried out by the Accra Metropolitan
Assembly (AMA) days ago revealed rather unfortunate results
as hawkers who have been driven
off the streets are gradually returning onto the streets and
pavements.
As at the time of our visit, authorities were struggling to
deal with the situation as these hawkers refuse to vacate
the pavements.
The decongesting exercise have paved way for a new way for
the traders to ply their trade.
Some carry samples of their wares in trays around and
whisper the praises of these goods to passers-by who might
eventually follow the trader to a hideout where the bulk of
the items being sold is kept.
At the Tema Station, Tudu, CMB, Rawlings Park, and the
surrounding areas, police, fire and prison officers as well
as AMA city guards are still struggling to check the hawkers
off the streets.
When asked why they are back on the streets, some said, they
had no choice since they have no where else to go.
Though the NPP government spent the tax payers money to
construct a Hawkers Mall at Circle for these traders, they
disclosed that customers do not come there to buy
their wares, thus their reason for selling on the streets
and pavements.
“We have no alternative; the AMA should have allowed us some
more time. We can not go to Circle because nobody comes to
buy from there, a hawker told Ghanadot.
The AMA has however reiterated that the exercise would
continue because the activities of these traders contribute
a lot to filth in the city.
Commentary, July 1, Ghanadot -
Adding value to African raw materials
enables importing countries to grow their industries,
financial and knowledge sectors while the African is
left with hoe in hand scratching the soils for minerals
and crop... even chicken scratch the soil. Little
ingenuity is needed in the scratch the soil model!

Development and the holiday mentality Commentary, July 1, Ghanadot -
We celebrate our achievements to date with holidays. Thus,
today, July 1st, is our Republic Day. Then there is Independent
Day and the funeral days, not counting other celebrative days.
That must add up to a lot of non-working days in a year.
