Prez Mills to
review measures to clamp down road accidents

Accra, March 19, Ghanadot - President John Evans Atta
Mills is scheduled to meet officials of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU),
the National Road Safety Commission and other major stakeholders in the
transport sector to review measures to clamp down on the current spate of road
accidents in the country.
Four separate road accidents have clamed about thirty lives and left several
others in critical condition.
An accident on the Winneba road is reported to have claimed the lives of
thirteen persons and recorded some 34 casualties with the number expecting to
rise.
Reports from the Swedru area also indicate the loss of eight lives from a
similar road accident.
A Tico vehicle is reported to have caused another accident in the Apegwa Afroso
area when in an attempt to overtake an articulator truck loaded with chlorine
sulphate, the Tico vehicle caused the truck to lose its cargo onto an oncoming
Benz 207 with registration number GR 611 N resulting in the death of some eleven
persons.
President John Mills has paid a visit to the accident victims admitted at the 37
Military hospital in the afternoon of March 19 to empathize with them.
Present on the tour were Hon. Mahama Ayariga, Presidential spokesperson and
Health Minister, Dr. George Sippah Yankey.
Dr. George Sippah Yankey speaking to expressed his appreciation to the doctors
and health personnel in the two hospitals for their dedication in the treatment
of the accident victims.
According to the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr. Koku Anyidoho
the meeting will discuss the most effective ways of dealing with carnage on
Ghana’s roads.
He noted that the President is alarmed at the frequency of the road accidents in
the country and noted that the President is determined to “tackle the problem
head on”.
Mr. Anyidoho disclosed that the President’s meeting is intended to reiterate the
point that his Presidency is not about “rhetoric” but action and added that the
President will assess work done by the various stakeholders in the transport
sector.
