Road accident claim 20 lives, hospitals call for help
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, March 19, Ghanadot - Three separate road accidents have clamed over twenty lives and left several others in critical condition. With varying causes and differing degrees of intensity, the accidents have left the hospitals in the areas affected over burdened with patients.

An accident on the Winneba road is reported to have claimed the lives of eleven persons and recorded some 34 casualties with the number expecting to rise.Reports from the Swedru area also indicate the loss of eight lives from a similar road accident.

A Tico vehicle is reported to have caused another accident in the Apegwa Afroso area when in an attempt to overtake an articulator truck loaded with chlorine sulphate, caused it to lose its cargo onto an oncoming Benz 207 with registration number GR 611 N resulting in the death of some ten persons.

According to eye witnesses, of the fourteen passengers on board, four women died on the spot and with four others left in coma.

Dr. Okuley, a Medical Officer with the Winneba Government Hospital, said on the Citi FM that the number of casualties in the Winneba road accident was expected to rise.

Eleven persons have so far died from serious burnt wounds they sustained when a fuel tanker caught fire; several others are in critical condition and could lose their lives.

The accident, which occurred on Wednesday March 18 at the Winneba Roundabout in the Central Region left about 36 victims with severe burns which degree is put between 80-90%.

Dr. Okuley said he was forced to call all staff members including staff from other health centres in the area to aid in the treatment of the accident victims because the “burns were beyond what Winneba could handle”.
