Stop negative cultural practices in the society - Prez Mills

Accra, July 27, Ghanadot - President John Evans Atta Mills has charged the Clergy and traditional leaders to collaborate with the media to wage a crusade against some cultural practices such as excessive funeral arrangements, which have a negative impact on society.

This move by Mresident Mills is because most bereaved families end up in debt after spending huge sums of money, which could be channeled into more productive ventures.

He made the call in a speech read on his behalf by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Armah Ashitey, at a special thanksgiving service to climax activities marking the 50th Anniversary of St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Tema.

According to the President, apart from the financial repercussions, the display of opulence at funerals does not depict humility. He noted that the Church is the best place to implement measures to bring some order in funeral celebrations, since it is mostly involved in funeral arrangements.

Rt. Rev. Paul Egyiri, Administrative Bishop of the St. Paul Cathedral noted that the Methodist Church already initiated the crusade by collaborating with some traditional authorities to ban Wake-Keepings. He said to push the crusade further; the government also needs to take a second look at the pomp and pageantry associated with state funerals for the rest of the society to emulate.

Delivering the sermon, which focused on “Sustaining the Foundation of the Church, the Presiding Bishop of the Tema Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Achamfour-Yeboah, said the foundations of several state institutions, including industries have collapsed due to corruption and poor ethical practices.

The occasion was also used to cut the sod for a commercial complex to generate revenue for the church and the unveiling of a plaque bearing the name of sixty founding members of the St. Paul’s Cathedral.
