Eight acre "wee" plantation destroyed in Asunafo North
Kokofu (B/A), Oct. 12, GNA - A joint police and
forestry personnel task force at the weekend, destroyed an eight
acre Indian hemp plantation, located inside the Bia-Tano forest
reserve in the Asunafo North municipality of Brong Ahafo.
No one was arrested, but it was suspected some residents of
Kokofu, a predominantly farming community near Mim were
involved.
It took the team, led by Inspector Emmanuel Darkwah Owiredu, the
station officer at Mim, more than three hours to undertake the
exercise.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the scene after the
exercise, Mr Tweneboah Donkor, Goaso Forestry Manager, said the
action followed a tip-off that a large tract of the reserve had
been depleted and planted with some leaves suspected to be
Indian hemp.
He said acting upon the information, the division and the police
mobilized the team to the area and discovered the plantation.
The Forestry Manager said the police were conducting
investigations to arrest the culprits.
Meanwhile, Superintendent Mohammed Ali, Goaso divisional police
commander, has given the assurance that the police were
determined to clamp down on criminals in the municipality.
He expressed concern about the spate of drug abuse and peddling
in the municipality and appealed to the general public to
provide information about people of questionable character to
the police.
