Girl, 20, dies in a street fight over a mobile phone

Kumasi, June 23, Ghanadot/GNA - A controversy over a mobile phone that culminated into a fierce fight between two female head porters (“Kayayei”), resulted in sudden death of one of them in Kumasi last Saturday.

The body of the deceased given as Sharifatu had been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) morgue pending autopsy.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi on Tuesday, Chief Inspector Remmy Tinati of the Kejetia Police Division said the deceased, who was 20 years old and Yaa Abrefi, 19, were friends.

He said they both ladies hailed from the Northern part of Ghana.
The Chief Inspector said last Saturday June 20, around 0830 hours, the two friends, who always spend the night in front of a shop, were seen engaged in a scuffle over how a phone owned by Yaa Abrefi’s boyfriend got to Sharifatu, the deceased.

Chief Inspector Tinati said in the course of the fight, Sharifatu was said to have landed a heavy punch on Yaa Abrefi’s face. He said in retaliation Yaa Abrefi threw several punches, which took Sharifatu to ground and she fell unconscious.

She was subsequently rushed to KATH but was pronounced dead on reaching the hospital and a report was made to the police.

Chief Inspector Tinati said Yaa Abrefi is in police custody while the police make efforts to trace their respective families.

Meanwhile police investigation is on-going.
