The only justifable coup in
Ghana was the one against Nkrumah -.
Arthur Kennedy

Accra, June 4, Ghanadot -
Dr Arthur Kennedy a leading
member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Communication's
Director for Nana Addo 2008 presidential campaign , says the
only coup in Ghana's political history which can be
justified is the one which happened 1966 and led to the
overthrow of the country's first Pesident, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
According to the NPP guru, Dr Nkrumah before
his overthrow on February 24 1966,
had turned Ghana into a one party state and it was
impossible to change government through the ballot box.
"The only circumstance under which a coup may
be justified is when it is impossible for citizens to change
the leadership of the country through the ballot box and
that makes the overthrow of Nkrumah justified", he argued.
He said, under such conditions, the only way
to restore the rights of the people, is to remove the
dictatorship.
Speaking on Joy fm in
Accra, the NPP guru said, beyond the 1966 coup, none of the
other intrusions into the political scene was warranted.
But the comment by Arthur Kennedy has not
come without sharp rebuttal by some political analysts in
the country.
Mr Acheampong, for
instance refuted the claims made by Arthur Kennedy and said,
coup de tats of any kind should be condemned and there
should not be a justifiable coup and unjustifiable one.
It should be noted that, Dr Kwame Nkrumah was
overthrown on February 24, 1966 while on his way to Hanoi,
Vietnam for peace talks.
The coup
d'etat, organized by dissident army officers, toppled the
Nkrumah government and was promptly hailed by Western
governments, including the U.S.
The
1966 coup was said to have been
initiated by the CIA.
