Authorities rescue giant turtles from fisherfolks
Aflao, (V/R), March 14, Ghanadot/GNA - Two
large turtles which were caught up in a net by fishermen at
a beach at Aflao have been rescued by a team of policemen
who dispersed the fisherfolks who attempted to kill them.
A spokesman for the police at Aflao told the Ghana News
Agency (GNA) that while on security duties along the beach
to ward off sand-winners near Atorkukope, the policemen saw
some youth pulling a push-truck on which was some luggage
covered by a piece of cloth and being followed by a group of
fishermen.
The policemen, he said became alarmed as they saw some
movement beneath the cloth covering the items on the truck
and subsequently rushed there and found the two large
endangered mammals which, the fishermen admitted were being
sent m home to be killed for the meat as they got trapped in
their net.
The spokesman said the policemen ordered the truck and the
turtles back to the beach where they were released back into
the sea.
Sea turtles have been declared endangered species and their
capture, slaughter and sale of their meat is retrained by
law.
