Teachers advised to learn more about HIV/AIDS

Takoradi, July 13 GNA- Ms. Helena Awurusa, National Coordinator for Gender and HIV/AIDS at the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has advised that it was important for all Ghanaians, to learn about the disease, its mode of transmission and its avoidance.

She said it is also important to live a healthy lifestyle and refrain from having sex with different partners to avoid catching the disease.

Ms. Awurusa said these at the opening of a five-day workshop for 50 teachers selected from the Western Region as well as District Secretaries and Coordinators of GNAT and the ladies association.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) and Education International (EI) sponsored the workshop with a grant of 20,000 United States dollars.

Ms. Awurusa said teachers should be aware of the causes and effects of the diseases and that behavioural change was necessary in the fight against the spread of the disease and urged all Ghanaians to take the warning seriously.

Ms. Awurusa said teachers were being encouraged to go for voluntary counselling (VCT) and testing to ascertain their status.

Mr. Evans Degboe, Operational Manager of Precision Communications, an NGO said participants are expected to identify and develop effective methods of teaching their children the effects of the HIV/AIDS.
