Fire guts Korle-Bu Hearing Centre

Accra, June 17, Ghanadot/GNA - The Hearing Assessment Centre of the Korle Teaching Hospital in Accra was on Tuesday evening gutted by fire resulting in the loss of equipment and destruction of the building that cost about 500,000 dollars.

Dr Emmanuel Dornu Kitcher, Head of the Centre, told the GNA in an interview that the cause of the fire, which started around 1800 hours, had not yet been determined by the Ghana National Fire Service.

He said the centre was one of the only two big Audiology centres since it catered for hearing impaired patients from the whole of the southern part of Ghana.

"Considering the state of the Centre as of now, it is only the one at Kumasi which will have to take care of our patients," Dr Kitcher said.
He said the Centre, which was built four years ago by the Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, took care of about 25 patients everyday and its present state was a big worry to the Hospital.

Dr Kitcher appealed to corporate Ghana to come to the aid of the Centre since it played a vital role in the health of Ghanaians.

"If every Ghanaian can pay one cedi, I believe it will go a long way to renovate this national asset," he said.
