Feeding grant for SHS up by 50%

By Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot

Accra, Aug 24, Ghanadot - Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Education has increased the school feeding grant from GH80p to GH˘1.20 for all public senior high schools throughout the country. This increase represents about 50% compared with last year.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Paul Kofi Krampa who disclosed in Accra, over the weekend.
He disclosed that the increase followed approval by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning for an upward adjustment with effect from the 2009- 2010 academic year, which begins next month.

The feeding grant caters for purchases of food items, cooking utensils and gas, among others.

The increase breaks the impasse that had developed over the issue between the Ghana Education Service and the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS). While CHASS demanded GH˘1.20 per student, the GES stuck to GH˘1.00.

Meanwhile, following the increase, the Ministry of Education has asked heads of public institutions to ensure that the students are provided with nutritious meals. They should also ensure that basic cooking equipment are provided in the dining halls.
