Well said and kudos. You did address the issue and made relevant
pointers to the solution. What I have observed is a rather disinterest
in research by government in walking the talk as far as scientific
research is concerned. We may ask how much of our budget is targeted
at research? The CSIR the major research powerhouse of our nation is
no different. Research in our institutions are dictated by funding and
unfortunately the funds are in the main external and therefore skewed
towards the interest of the funder. Until policy direction is backed
sufficiently by adequate funding from the national purse there shall
be little or no motivation for the in all our institutions of higher
learning to pursue the agenda needed to address.
For instance without further taxes, policy is required to apportion a
significant percentage from all current added taxes to a scientific
research fund which my be made available through competitive bidding
to institutions to address pressing research issues.
Companies may be encouraged through attractive tax reliefs to
contribute to a selected national scientific research projects with
efficient management teams that show the tendency to affect the
socio-economic advancement of the country.
The CSIR reported to the presidency in Nkrumah's regime, a clear sign
of how important scientific research appealed to him.
It is not too late to re direct policy to provide funding for a
national scientific research agenda devoid of partisan politics.

Dumsor causing stir on our
