Vodafone Ghana Foundation launches Red Alert to Support flood
victims
Accra, June 28,
The Vodafone Ghana Foundation has launched a unique campaign
known as Red Alert to assist victims of the recent floods that
have hit the country. Red Alert is a platform that the Vodafone
Foundation uses to support victims of natural and other forms of
disaster.
In the past few week, parts of the country have experienced
severe flooding leading to loss of lives and property, running
into several thousands of Ghana cedis and have displaced a great
number of people, who desperately need the support of the entire
country.
Government agencies, including the National Disaster
Management Organisation (NADMO) have been doing their best to
give the flood victims some form of relief; but it’s refreshing
to see corporate bodies like Vodafone contribute to the relief
effort. Vodafone’s Red Alert programme has come, in time, to
support efforts by the state institutions to assist the flood
victims.
With the Red Alert platform, the Vodafone Ghana Foundation is
giving everyone the opportunity to offer some help to those
disadvantaged by the floods.
Red Alert is powered by the shortcode 133, which allows customers of Vodafone to donate GHC1
every time they text the word “help” to the short code 133.
The
funds that will be generated from public support through the Red
Alert platform will be topped up by the Vodafone Ghana
Foundation to purchase items that are urgently needed by the
numerous people who are disadvantaged as a result of the floods.
Any other form of support needed by the flood victims will be
provided through the funds that will be gathered.
Speaking in an interview, in Accra, the head of corporate
communications at Vodafone Ghana, Ike Cudjoe, said the company
was moved by the images and the heartbreaking stories of the
flood victims and felt a need to do something about the
situation.
He said Vodafone believes that even if they are not
able to restore homes and properties that have been destroyed by
the floods, “together with well meaning individuals in Ghana, we
can all help make it better by donating just one Ghana cedi via SMS. We are encouraging other corporate organizations and
individuals to join in this initiative for us all to give back
to the flood victims.”
Vodafone is showing the way on how telecom companies can use
their technology as a force for good and give back to the
communities in which they do business. This is an opportune time
for all other oganisations to offer assistance to the people who
need them in such critical times.
