Zoomlion urges MPs to help use grant to prevent malaria

Accra, Feb. 25, Ghanadot/GNA - Zoomlion Ghana Limited has appealed to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment Science and Technology to ensure that the greater part of the US President’s grant was used in the prevention of malaria rather than its cure.

Mr George William Bush, the US President made a pledge for the grant of 17 million dollars for the control of malaria during his three-day visit to the country last week.

Mrs. Florence Larbi, General Manager Zoomlion made the appeal when the Parliamentary Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology paid a courtesy call on the company in Accra on Friday.
According to her, the problem of sanitation has been an age-old one, especially in Africa, hence the attainment of a healthy nation was tied to
the attainment of environmental sanitation.

Mrs. Larbie said sanitation was key among the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which, among other things, aimed at halving the number of people without access to sanitation by the year 2015.

"This goal has been one of the major issues driving our company as we strive to provide a clean and a healthy environment for our country and
beyond," she said and expressed the hope that Zoomlion would be a major partner in achieving the aims of the MDGs.

Mrs. Larbi recalled that, this year has been declared as the International Year of Sanitation to encourage Governments and its partners to promote and implement policies and actions for meeting the sanitation target.

"You will also realize that with our presence in Ghana to help find solutions to the problems of sanitation, jobs have also been created for thousands of our unemployed youth in the country," she stated.

The Vice-Chairman of the committee, Mr Joseph Yaani Labik who led the Parliamentary team said the Committee had recognized the good job being done by the company in ensuring that, the cities and towns across the nation were kept clean.

He also said the creation of jobs that resulted out of the company's activities was very helpful to the youth of the country.

"Our visit was to familiarize ourselves with the operations and appreciate the challenges the company goes through in its smooth operations,"

He said the company had been a good partner in supporting government, district assemblies, municipal authorities and the private sector in the bid
to keep Ghana clean.

The Communications Manager of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Mrs. Isabella Gyau Orhin expressed delight that during the Ghana 2008 tournament which attracted a lot of people from around the world, the company was able to help sustain a clean environment for all the stadia and their environs.

She said the Company was now strengthening its marketing department to enable it to expand its private clientele base, while working to expand its activities to other countries.
