Accra, Sept 27, Ghanadot -
Impeccable source at the Information ministry has hinted
Ghanadot that, Mr. Ampem Darko, the Director General of the
Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has been asked to
proceed on leave.
The source said, the decision to make Ampem Darko steps aside was a unanimous one taken by the
board members of the state broadcaster.
For several months now, the government has come under
intense pressure to make head roll in the Ghana Broadcasting
Corporation because of the various blunders being
committed at the state broadcasting.
When President Barak Obama paid a historic visit to Ghana in
July this year, the state broadcaster failed to broadcast
live quality pictures at a time when the American President
was addressing Africa from Ghana.
Also, in August this year, when Ghana’s senior national team
was playing friendly match with its Zambian counterparts in
London, GBC failed to broadcast the match live even though
it had earlier on carried an advert to telecast the match
live.
The situation was the same when Ghana played with
Japan in Holland in September this year. GBC promised to
telecast the match live but viewers could rather watch the
replay.
On Thursday September 24, President Mills was billed to
address the UN General Assembly and the state broadcasting
corporation once again carried an advert promising to
telecast the speech live from the United State of America
but viewers were once again disappointed. The live broadcast
never came on.
According to our source, all these and other problems
compelled the government to ask Mr Ampem Darko to proceed
on leave until further notice.
