Committee to
review GT sales to Vodafone set up
By Abdul Salam Sule, Ghanadot
Accra, April 28, Ghanadot - Barely a week after the
launch of Vodafone Ghana, the Minister of Communication, Mr
Haruna Iddrisu has revealed that, the government has set up a
five member committee to review the sale of Ghana Telecom (GT)
to Vodafone.
The Minister said,
the review was to ensure transparency and also to fulfill the
NDC's campaign pledge of reviewing the sales agreement.
It should be noted that the National Democratic Congress
promised in its manifesto to investigate the sale of GT to
Vodafone when it assumes power.
Meanwhile, Mr Fred Opare Ansah, the immediate past deputy
Minister of Communication said, the review of GT sale
should not be news to anybody
since the NDC
party, now
in government, had already
raised the issue in its manifesto.
The Communication Minister made his statement
during a meeting with the Mangers of the British
telecommunication giant.
The committee Mr Haruna said, would investigate the transaction
which pave the way for Vodafone to buy 70% shares of Ghana
Telecom for 900 million dollars.
According to the Minister, the committee would look out for the
indemnity clause in the sales agreement which insulates
individuals involved in the deal from prosecution and it would
consider whether there were better
offers that were ignored by the previous administration.
Also to be considered by the committee is the inclusion of the
National fibre optic backbone in the sale agreement, an
infrastructure which the current government thinks should remain
a national asset. It would also touch on the decoupling of Ghana
Telecom University from Vodafone Ghana.
Also, the committee would consider the huge liability of GT
prior to the sale and why those liabilities were not declared
during the sale. It would also review the labour rationalization
package that requests workers to voluntarily resign.
He however cautioned the government to tread cautiously in the
review of the sales agreement.
"There is nothing wrong with the review but it should be done
with care so that the investor community would not loose
confidence in the country" he warned.
