African Film Academy interacts with Filmmakers, others
Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot

Accra, March 11, Ghanadot - Some key officials of the African Film Academy , organizers of the prestigious African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) have interacted with Ghanaian filmmakers, producers, directors, writers, designers, actors and actresses in Ghana.

The purpose of the interaction was to familiarise themselves with problems challenging the Ghanaian Movie industry and how to solve them.

Speaking at cocktail party, the leader of the AMAA Delegation, Mrs. Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of AMAA discussed with her Ghanaian counterparts on how to use the awards to enhance and strengthen the movie industry on the African continent.

This she noted would enable the continent movie industries in Ghana and Nigeria to be at par with the Hollywood and the rest.

Mrs. Anyiam-Osigwe discarded the notion that AMAA was a Nigerian award scheme set up to export and promote Nigerian movies to other African countries as well as Europe and the US .

Irrespective of where the awards originated from, AMAA was an event targeted at rewarding and celebrating all African movie industry players, she argued.

“It is not a Nigeria or a Ghana thing, neither is South Africa or Burkina Faso . People at times even ask, is AMAA not a way of getting into our market?”, she indicated.

According to her, the awards were aimed at honouring and promoting excellence in the African movie industry as well as uniting the African continent through arts and culture. Also, it is a basic step to opening our doors for African movies onto the global market.

The C.E.O, revealed that every year movies that win awards at AMAA go international, and made reference to Ghana ’s ‘Run Baby run’ of Rivele Films fame.

‘I also know some other movies which have also won some awards at AMAA and have gone to international, Mrs. Anyiam-Osigwe added.

The cocktail party attracted movies personalities included David Dontoh, Fred Amugi, Rama Brew, Kofi Bucknor, Oscar Provencal, Emmanuel Apea and his wife Mrs. Julia Apea both of Rivele Films.

They pledged their support for the awards festival, and believed that Ghana would make some significant impact in the awards.

The paper gathered that AMAA over the years rewarded many movie stars across the continent, in which Ghana is not exception.

Entries for the awards always begin from September to December every year and movies received from the entries undergo thorough screening processes by the Theatre and Art graduates of various universities on the African land.

Additionally, the movies are viewed by a competent Review Committee, then to another competent body known as the Academy of Jury which comprises top creators of various international films. They decide who the nominees of the year and other categories under review would go to. This is either announced in March or April.
