Late arrivals of vessels; reason for fuel shortage-TOR
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot

Accra, Sept 28, Ghanadot - The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has acknowledged some level of shortage of Petroleum products in the country.

The shortage, according to TOR, is as a result of late arrivals of Vessels discharging the products to the Refinery’s Tanks at Tema.

TOR has not refined crude for more than a year. The situation has put immense pressure on the government to import finished products mainly from Nigeria, Angola and Equatorial Guinea.

Long queues have recently been seen in certain filling stations across the country. Several areas in Ashanti, Eastern, Volta and the Central regions were the worst hit as Petrol, LPG and Kerosene were in short supply recently.

Speaking on Citi FM, the Managing Director of TOR, Dr Kwame Ampofo, revealed that beginning sometime next week; Tema Oil Refinery will begin refining crude oil.

He explained that the liquidity problems of TOR are not necessarily responsible for the petroleum shortage; although he admits that about 57 Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) owe the refinery to the tune of about three hundred and eighty million Ghana Cedis.

To him in due time about 20 of these defaulting companies will have their names published.

The new administration of TOR early this year cut off some Oil Marketing Companies which have exceeded their grace periods in paying their debts.

The government’s interventions at meeting Ghana’s energy needs, especially in the petroleum sector, has witnessed some impressive outcomes as Libya joined Nigeria, sometime in June this year, to supply Ghana with crude.

The President, John Mils struck a deal with Libya’s Muammmar Al-Qadafi at the 13th Ordinary summit of the African Union in Libya.

The deal came a month after Ghana secured an assurance from the Nigerian government to supply crude to Ghana on friendly terms.

Under that agreement Nigeria pledged to supply Ghana with 65,000 barrels of crude daily on a 90 day credit terms.
