Chereponi by-elections, 1,000 police officers deployed to the
area
Audrey Micah, Ghanadot
Accra, Sept 11, Ghanadot - Over 1,000 armed policemen and three
continent battalions from a detachment of the 6th Infantry
Battalion (6BN) in Tamale will be deployed to Chereponi to
supervise the by-elections.
Currently, half the number is already on the ground and on
constant patrol, while plans are far advanced to dispatch the
other batch to the area before the close of next week.
The move is aimed at combating reprisals and violence during the
September 29 by-election in the Chereponi constituency of the
Northern region.
The Northern Regional Police Commander, ACP Angwubutoge Awuni in
an interview on radio, said he was determined to avert any
bloodshed and rancour in the area.
He cautioned contesting political parties to operate within the
laws of the country. He said security personnel on the ground
would be given strict instructions to deal thoroughly with any
individual or group of persons who would try to undermine the
electoral processes in the Chereponi constituency.
Five political parties will be contesting in the Chereponi
by-election on September 29, the second major by-election in the
country.
The elections will be conducted in all the 55 polling stations
in the area with a total vote population of 23,270. The
Chereponi seat became vacant following the death of Madam Doris
Asibi Seidu who was serving a second term as the MP for the area
on the ticket of the NPP.
