Accra, April 17, Ghanadot - The
Police administration has withdrawn DCOP Ofosu Mensah
Gyeabour as the Northern Regional Police Commander from
immediate effect.
This was confirmed by the acting Inspector General of
Police, Mrs Elizabeth Mills Robertson to newsmen this
evening in Accra.
The withdrawal of the Northern Regional Police Commander
follows a confrontation between the Northern Regional
Minister, Mr Stephen Sumani Nayina and the police commander.
On Tuesday April 14, the Northern Regional Minister
allegedly walked DCOP Mensah Gyeabour out of a Regional
Security Council meeting for leaking intelligence
information to the media. An allegation which the Northern
Regional Police Commander had denied.
According to the acting IGP, the withdrawal of the police
commander was not to punish him but to protect his career.
She said, the reason was to let peace prevail in the region
which has almost a decade enjoyed fragile peace.
His two deputies have therefore been tasked to take over
until further notice.
Meanwhile, Dr Kwasi Anning, a security expert at the Kofi
Annan International Peace Keeping Centre has described the
withdrawal of DCOP Gyeabour as terribly unfortunate because
he is a competent police officer. He said, it was rather the
Northern Regional Minister who must be sacked from office
for gross incompetence in dealing with security situations
in the Northern Region.
According to Dr Anning, the conduct of the minister clearly
demonstrate his lack of understanding of the complex issues
on security and must therefore be sacked by the President.
