Women activists root for Ms Koomson for MCE post

Akyem Oda (E/A) April 11 Ghanadot/GNA - A group of women in the Birim Central Municipality, calling itself Women Activists have appealed to President John Evans Attah Mills to appoint Ms Ophelia Koomson, second Vice-Chairperson of the Akyem Oda Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).


In a statement issued at Akyem Oda and signed by Ms Pearl Nkansah, Secretary of the group, described Ms Koomson, who is a teacher by profession as a hardworking person, who could move the development agenda of the Birim Central Municipal Assembly forward.


The statement observed that none of the 18 names nominated by the President for the position of District /Municipal Chief Executive in the Eastern Region was a woman and appealed to the President to consider the choice of Ms Koomson to occupy the Birim Central Municipal Chief Executive post.


The statement said Ms Koomson, who holds a Bachelor of Arts, Education Degree (BED) in Social Studies from the University Of Education Winneba (UEW), is currently the Headmistress of the Akyem Oda Wesley Methodist Junior High School (JHS).


She had been a subject mistress at the Akyem Oda Saint Francis Senior High School (SHS) from 2004-2006, Head Teacher, Akyem Swedru Methodist Primary School from 1998-2000.


Ms Koomson, the statement said, was an elected assembly member for the then Birim South District Assembly (BSDA) from 1989-1992, Government appointee for the assembly 1992-1996.


“Finance and Administration Sub-Committee Secretary; BSDA from 1992-1996, a member of the complaints and emolument of the Assembly Committee from 1992-1996,” the statement said.


The statement said Ms Koomson, was also the chairperson for the Area and Town Council Committee and Finance and Administration, BSDA, from 1996-2000.


She was the Branch Chairperson, NDC, from 1992-2008; Second Vice-Chairperson Akyem Oda Constituency NDC, from 2005 to date and Constituency Treasurer from 2000-2004.


The statement said Ms Koomson had been a member of UEW North Campus NDC 2000-2004.


She also attended several courses including an orientation course for assembly members at the University of Ghana, Legon in 1989.
